Mesothelioma Causes: Find Out What You Need To Know

By Tom Addison

Affecting the mesothelial cells, there tend to be three primary mesothelioma causes. These are relatively well researched and understood, despite the conditions rarity. It is an increasingly common affectation though, particularly across Europe though most of the western world is likely to see an increase in cases over coming years.

The majority of the organs in the human body comprise a membrane constructed from mesothelial cells. As such, the lungs and to a lesser degree the abdomen is commonly affected by the disease.

In almost all cases of pleural mesothelioma, the cause will be asbestos exposure. A heavily used material for much of the mid to late twentieth century, it is this above all else that is likely to be behind the rise in cases of the condition over coming years.

An insulating material heavily used in major industry; those who worked in the manufacturing industries, particularly those of ship building and automotive manufacture are particularly at risk. Those working in the construction industry and in power stations have an increased risk too.

Mesothelioma causes go further than this though. Radiation, most commonly that which contains thorium dioxide for example is known to be responsible. Regrettably, those having undergone treatment for other forms of cancer are liable to have been exposed to this, though exacting proof is not commonly accepted as yet.

A naturally occurring mineral, Zeolite, which is found in high levels in Turkey in particular, causes the condition in much the same way as asbestos. Also artificially produced, those working in the petroleum industry and plastics manufacture may have been exposed as a result.

Though there are certain areas where the condition can be traced back to, there are also many cases where the mesothelioma causes remains unknown. Though effective treatment remains a subject of much study, there are many avenues of support open to sufferers.
