A Quick Look At What Is Mesothelioma

By Jessica Evans

A rare form of cancer, mesothelioma, is becoming more and more common today. It affects the cells in the protective lining that covers the major body organs such as the lungs, heart, and stomach. The primary cause of this is exposure to asbestos, and signs of this disease may take as long as 30 to 40 years to show up. That is why it is important to ask: What is mesothelioma?

This disease can start to develop as soon as inhalation or ingestion of asbestos fibers occurs. Those fibers attach and stay on the linings of major organs. As time goes on, those fibers cause inflammation of the lining and tumors can develop. But those tumors provide no symptoms until they are very advanced, which leaves patients with limited treatment options and poor prognosis.

Anyone who has been exposed to asbestos or worked with it in the past may be in danger of already having this disease, even if they have no symptoms. The symptoms that do occur are so close to symptoms of over conditions, it is difficult to diagnose. In addition to that, there are many instances when this form of cancer is overlooked completely.

The only way to find out if one has this disease is through regular checkups of asbestos exposure, especially since there are no early symptoms. The most common organ affected is the lungs, but the lining of the stomach and heart can also be affected. Symptoms can include swallowing difficulty, shortness of breath, palpitations, persistent coughs, weight loss, nausea, and fatigue.

Despite how common it is becoming, no cure is available at this time, although alternative therapies and experimental treatments are available. In most cases, a patient will undergo surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy to relieve their symptoms and improve the quality of life. There are times when those treatments can cause remission to prolong life.

Research is being done to try to find effective treatment, even for those with late stage cancer Age and overall health can play a factor in prognosis and any form of treatment. Anyone that has ever been exposed to asbestos needs to ask: What is mesothelioma?

Pleural Plaques Do Not Necessarily Signify Other Disease

By Jessica Evans

Pleural plaques are a kind of scar tissue within the parietal pleura. This is the outer lining that surrounds the lung. They are caused by asbestos exposure in almost every case, however, they are not present in every person who has had such exposure.

These sections of tissue are smooth, white and irregularly shaped. Made up of collagen, they sometimes also have fibers of asbestos in them and may become calcified. When they are calcified, they will show up more easily on a scan.

The size of these formations is variable but, when they're larger, it is more common to find asbestos fibers within the lungs as well. It is possible to find fibers in the lungs, though, even if there is none of this type of scarring in the parietal pleura.

The problem will typically show up about twenty years after exposure. They occur in around half of the people who have been exposed to asbestos over a period of time. They are discovered through radiographs or CT scans as they are not associated with any particular symptoms.

This tissue formation is benign, it does not turn into cancer and do not signify that lung disease relating to asbestos is present. Once it occurs, it can get worse even if there is no more exposure. While it isn't a sign of other diseases, a lot of people who have it will also have other diseases relating to asbestos.

In the past, it was believed that they formed because of scarring from asbestos fibers penetrating the visceral pleura. Now, though, it's believed that the fibers are brought there by the lymph system and the plaques are formed through an immune system response.

Pleural plaques don't impact a person's health much on their own. So long as lung function is not inhibited, they do not require treatment. They can, however, indicated that the person should keep monitoring his or her health so that an other problems are discovered as soon as they occur.

The Jobs Where Exposure To Asbestos Is Common

By AJ Handley

It is a material that has been around for thousands of years. Its name is said to originate from the Ancient Greeks, the word roughly translated to mean inextinguishable. Its usage carried on up until the late twentieth century, in everything from building material to filters in cigarettes. The dangers of the material are now well known and it is important to know the jobs where exposure to asbestos is common.

One of the most obvious is in the removal of the item itself. It can cause lung infections and even a small amount can be lethal. This is why it is important that removal professionals are prepared and suitably ready to handle and dispose of the material.

The material has been used in a wide number of industries and numerous different types of products. It is generally mostly known for being used as an insulator. However it has been used in various other ways, including a material for a brand of cigarettes.

The material has been around for thousands of years. The Ancient Greeks were the first to use it. They called it asbestos, a word meaning inextinguishable. As the name suggests it was often used in fire prevention, alongside a number of other products.

The different types of industry that handle this material range from the automobile industry to the armed forces. Given the nature of some manufacturing plants and factories a lack of ventilation could increase the spread of spores that can affect the lungs. A lot of industries are aware of this and are taking steps to have the material removed.

It is unfortunately a fact that if you work in an older building it is likely that you are in one of the jobs where exposure to asbestos is common. If this is a concern it is vital that you talk to your manager or supervisor and ask about their policy concerning the removal of the material. Look online for more advice on how to safely remove the material and to be aware of the potential health risks.

Radiation Found In West Coast Milk

A glass of milkImage via Wikipedia

Radioactive materials in liquids are measured in pico-curies per liter, and the sample, taken March 25, showed a reading of 0.8 pico-curies, the agency said. Those numbers, it said, would have to be 5,000 times higher to reach the “intervention level” set by the Food and Drug Administration.

“These types of findings are to be expected in the coming days and are far below levels of public health concern, including for infants and children,” the environmental agency said.
Levels of iodine 131 entering the air can be very diluted, but if the iodine is deposited on grass eaten by cows, the cows will reconcentrate it in their milk by a factor of 1,000. This is mainly a concern with fresh milk, not for dairy products that are stored before consumption.

Iodine 131 has a half-life of eight days, meaning that every eight days it loses half its strength. Since production of iodine 131 stopped when the Fukushima reactors shut down on March 11, it has already been through two half-lives and could easily be halved once or twice more again before the milk is consumed as cheese or yogurt.

Iodine 131 emits beta particles, which resemble electrons. They are not considered a major hazard outside the human body, although in large doses, they can damage the cornea of the eye.

The problem arises when materials that emit beta particles are ingested or inhaled. Iodine 131 is chemically identical to normal, nonradioactive iodine and thus is absorbed into the body just as normal iodine is, mainly in the thyroid gland, where it delivers a concentrated dose to that small organ and can cause cancer.

In the Chernobyl nuclear accident of 1986, the biggest health effect was cases of thyroid cancer, especially in children living near the nuclear plant in Ukraine.
