Big Brother Amazon.com Deletes Books from Your Kindle Device

When I heard that Amazon.com could remotely delete books off Kindle devices, I was stunned. Imagine my shock when I learned that, in true Orweillian fashion, they had deleted the book 1984 by George Orwell, wiping it clean from Kindle devices around the world.

In today's feature story, I explain why Amazon.com has now become a new kind of Big Brother engaged in digital book burning:

I love Amazon.com. It offers the most pleasant online shopping experience in the world, and its rating and recommendation systems are remarkably good at predicting what you might like. But as the world's largest e-commerce company, Amazon.com also has a lot of power over consumers, and last week that translated into a truly Orweillian stunt by Amazon that deleted copies of the e-book 1984 from Kindle devices everywhere.

When I first read the news, I couldn't believe that books you buy on Kindle could be remotely deleted by Amazon.com -- without notice and without your permission. That this actually took place (with the Big Brother book 1984, no less) brings up some very scary realizations about Amazon.com's Kindle book reader:

• You apparently don't really own the books you buy through Kindle. You're just granted a temporary rental at the pleasure of Amazon.com, which may rescind that "right" at any time, without notice.

• If Amazon.com can delete one book off your Kindle (without your knowledge), it could delete them all. What happens when the U.S. government begins banning books (you know, books about freedom, or the U.S. Constitution, or how to make a backyard mortar out of PVC)? Will Amazon.com initiate a global delete process to remove any "illegal" books from your Kindle?

• If Amazon.com can delete books from your Kindle, it also stands to reason that it could modify books on your Kindle without your knowledge! Can you say, "Revisionist history?" One day all the books seem somehow... simplified...

• History is full of Police State governments that banned books and burned books in an attempt to limit the People's access to knowledge. Is Amazon.com now engaged indigital book burning?

• It's not just Amazon.com that's acting out the themes of a police state dictatorship: Don't forget that Google, Yahoo and other technology companies have openly cooperated with China's censorship schemes that have continued an inhumane state of political oppression in that country.

• The advantage of owning a real book (printed on trees) is that no one can take it from you without getting past your front door and your German Shepherd. Plus, the screens don't crack and the batteries don't run out. You can set a book down when you need a pause, and when you pick it up you'll find the page right where you left it. Amazing...

Just say no to DRM

The Amazon.com Kindle device is, by definition, a DRM device (Digital Rights Management). DRM is a term describing technologies that limit the ability of consumers to exercise control over content they've paid for. Record companies, of course, are famous for their battles over piracy, and for the longest time they insisted that downloadable music only be sold with DRM protections.

Ironically, Amazon.com now sells DRM-free MP3 music, as do many other websites. But that evolved only after years of heel digging and foot dragging by the brain-dead music industry that would have much preferred to keep the world stranded in the days of cassette tapes (where bootleg copies get progressively worse with each copy generation).

Today, you can't buy downloadable audio books without DRM limitations, nor can you download movies without DRM. This content-compromising technology is everywhere, seeking to limit your use of content you've already paid for.

That Amazon would sell DRM-encoded books on its own proprietary Kindle device is really no surprise: Selling DRM-free electronic copies of books that could be widely pirated could threaten Amazon's entire business foundation. Amazon sells books, after all. (Physical ones, printed on paper, with free shipping under their Prime program.)

How to turn your physical books into digital books

I have a much better solution for consumers: Just buy the books at a local bookstore, chop off the binders, scan them and OCR them into text files. Then you can read them on any device (such as a Sony Reader, or your laptop, or whatever).

Of course, it's a big operation: A good book binding chopper costs $1500 - $2000. A good double-sided scanning machine that can handle large books costs another $3000 or so. Decent OCR software costs another $300, and then you have to go through the song and dance of actually OCRing the files on a Windows computer somewhere. Not many people are willing to go through this trouble to read some books. But I am. Of course, I have other uses for the same equipment, so it's easier for me to justify. Today, I have more than 1,500 books that I've scanned into text files. They all fit on an SD card that plugs right into a Sony Reader. (This is what I carry with me when I travel.)

Given the relative ease of doing this, it's probably only a matter of time before the book industry faces its own Napster -- an offshore website where you can pay a monthly fee and download non-DRM scans of popular books.

Even now, you can download music, movies and all sorts of other content from similar sites operating outside the laws of the United States (like MP3Fiesta, MP3Panda, MovieBerry, etc.). Somewhere, somebody is probably gathering up the world's best-selling books, scanning them into PDF documents and preparing to unload them onto the world in exchange for a monthly fee.

If Amazon.com continues its Big Brother shenanigans with Kindle owners, I wouldn't be surprised to see a whole lot of people ditching Kindle and switching to buying DMR-free text books from pirate sites. The advantage of pirated content is that nobody can remotely delete it from your hard drive. The disadvantage, of course, is that authors and publishers don't get paid a percentage of the sales. And that means pirates would be doing to authors what publishers already do to authors: Screwing them over.

Just say NO to Kindle

I don't own a Kindle. Never had any interest in a device with DRM control over the books I supposedly "buy."

I like Amazon.com, but I don't trust 'em. And this massive deletion of 1984 on Kindle devices demonstrates exactly why I don't trust 'em.

Amazon engages in a tremendous amount of psychological profiling in order to make recommendations for related products you might want. By storing your entire purchase history (and wish list, and browsing history), Amazon's computers know far more about you than you might suspect: They know where you live, your gender, your hobbies and interests, whether you have kids and probably even a whole lot about your love life. By profiling the (DRM) books you read and the (DRM) movies you rent (through their movie service), they can assemble very accurate psychological profiles describing your views on gun rights, abortion, terrorism, health freedom, environmental protection and many other topics.

With this information, Amazon customers who buy "fringe" books (like books on "survival") could easily be flagged and handed over to U.S. government authorities. I'm not aware of Amazon.com abusing this information in any nefarious way (yet), but the fact that it exists on their servers -- and that they could abuse it if they wanted to -- is cause for some concern.

Perhaps this "accidental" deletion of the book 1984 from Kindle devices was a covert warning. Maybe there's a rebel technology expert working inside Amazon.com that's trying to send a message of freedom to all the Kindle owners: Beware of Big Brother Amazon.com! Deleting the book 1984 would be a clever way to send such a message (if anybody picked up on it).

Amazon, of course, claims it was all just a snafu. And they're sorry. And it will never happen again. And the fact that it reportedly happened to some books by Ayn Rand is also just pure coincidence... imagine that...

Okay, sure, if you trust Amazon.com then keep buying all your books digitally, giving Amazon.com complete control over your library. On the other hand, if you'd rather maintain control over your own library, just pop into a local bookstore, plop down some cash and buy a real book that you can take to your real home where you can really sit down and read it on your real toilet like a normal human being instead of some electronically-enslaved consumer leashed to a digital tether from Amazon's servers.

Buying Amazon-controlled electronic ebooks is, in my view, a complete waste of money. (And I even like the company!) What you buy today can be taken away from you tomorrow.

Don't hand Amazon.com control over your personal library. Just say NO to Kindle... and NO to DRM in general.

New Threat: Antibiotic-resistant Bacteria Causes Deadly Pneumonia

The real threat from swine flu is not really swine flu itself -- it's the bacterial pneumonia that strikes patients who are weakened by the flu, infecting their lungs and causing massive blood clots.

Now, as we approach the winter of the first global pandemic that's been declared in decades, a new strain of antibiotic-resistant pneumonia has surfaced in hospitals across North America (and published in The Lancet).

If this new, resistant pneumonia strain keeps circulating in hospitals when swine flu hits, we could be looking at an extremely dangerous viral / bacterial combination that could prove far deadlier than either one alone.

While the talking heads on TV have recently reported that thousands of people in the U.S. are now infected with the new "swine flu", or H1N1, there's another infectious disease problem brewing that has received little attention. The over-use and abuse of antibiotics has produced antibiotic-resistant bacteria. According to the National Institutes of Health, over the past forty years, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus has changed from a usually controllable nuisance into a serious publichealth problem.

At first, it was primarily one of the most common hospital-acquired infections. But in recent years, new strains ofantibiotic-resistant bacteria, often dubbed "super bugs", have popped up in communities and caused severe, even life-threatening infections in otherwise healthy people, involving the skin, heart, blood or bones.

Now a paper just published in the June edition of The Lancet Infectious Diseases discusses an emerging and potentially deadly threat from community acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) -- necrotizing, i.e. "flesh eating", pneumonia. And according to previous research published in Nature News, this type of pneumonia is fatal in 75 percent of cases.

Healthy patients hit by flesh-eating bacteria

Doctors at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta write in The Lancet Infectious Diseases article that CA-MRSA has become well known for causing skin and soft-tissue infections that are transmitted by person-to-person contact or contact with contaminated objects. However, now there are increasing cases of CA-MRSA caused pneumonia that kills lung tissue. And those becoming sick with the disease aren't necessarily the old and/or physically weak. In fact, according to the report from the Emory team led by Alicia Hidron, MD, an infectious diseases fellow and Henry Blumberg, MD, professor of medicine and epidemiology at Emory, CA-MRSA pneumonia appears to most commonly affect young and previously healthy patients.

Dr. Hidron and Dr. Blumberg also noted in their paper that, besides causing a high fever, CA-MRSA pneumonia can sometimes cause low blood pressure that progresses to septic shock and requires patients to be placed on mechanical respirators in order to breathe. Another important point discussed in the article may turn out to have special relevance due to the emergence of H1N1 influenza, especially by the time flu season rolls around this fall: potentially deadly CA-MRSA pneumonia appears to occur most commonly following a flu-type illness.

Serious MRSA disease can strike anyone, regardless of age, health or where they live. Outbreaks have occurred among young athletes who play contact sports and among people living in close quarters, such as nursing homes, military facilities, nursing homes, and childcare centers.

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases advises using these precautions to help prevent CA-MRSAinfections:

• Practice good hygiene.
• Keep cuts and scrapes clean and bandage until healed.
• Avoid contact with other people's wounds or bandages.
• Don't share soiled or used personal items, such as towels, washcloths, razors, or clothes.
• Use hot water and bleach to wash soiled sheets, towels and clothes.

It's Not The Flu...It's The Vaccine!

Jane Burgermeister has filed bioterrorism charges with the FBI against Avir Green Hills Biotechnology, based in Austria; Baxter AG, also in Austria; and its parent company Baxter International in Deerfield, Illinois. Guess which company is providing much of the swine flu vaccine for mass inoculation -Baxter International. This is the same Baxter International that sent bird flu virus to European laboratories 'by mistake' earlier this year and it was mixed with a seasonal flu virus to create a much more dangerous strain.

Last year at least 81 people were killed by Baxter International's contaminated blood-thinning product, heparin, which was made in China from, among other things, pig intestines. Isn't pharmaceutical medicine wonderful? The contaminated heparin also seriously injured hundreds of others and it was revealed that the factory of Baxter's Chinese supplier had never been inspected by either American or Chinese public 'protection' agencies.

More than 50 dialysis patients died in 2001 because of faults with Baxter International equipment, and this month Baxter Healthcare Corporation, a subsidiary of Baxter International, reached an out-of-court settlement of two million dollars with the State of Kentucky. Baxter had been caught inflating the cost of intravenous drugs sold to Kentucky Medicaid by as much as 1,300 per cent.

This is clearly a company you can trust and it is now is a major source of the swine flu vaccine that governments across the world want to impose upon entire populations with the most minimal safety checks. The vaccine is being fast-tracked through the regulatory system with safety trials lasting less than a week. The London Times reported:

'Regulators at the European Medicines Agency said the fast-tracked procedure has involved clinical trials of a "mock-up" vaccine similar to the one that will be used for the biggest mass vaccination program in generations. It will be introduced into the general population while regulators continue to carry out simultaneous clinical trials.'

My emphasis.

The scale and speed of the planned vaccination program is insane given that the overwhelming majority of those who have contracted the virus have had very mild symptoms. Dr Peter Holden of the Rothschild-controlled British Medical Association said that although swine flu was not causing serious illness they were eager to start a mass vaccination campaign, beginning with 'priority groups'. Ugh?? This is not about public health and never was.

Code Red: FDA Approves Dangerous Blood Thinner

Again I have to wonder who the FDA is protecting...because it certainly isn't us.

Late Friday, the FDA announced that they were approving a new drug -- Effient, Eli Lilly's new blood thinner -- even though this drug comes with extremely dangerous and potentially deadly risks.

The drug is so dangerous that the FDA has technically approved it only for specific patients, people getting angioplasty. Here's the catch: In the study the approval was based on, patients taking Effient faced "a greater risk of significant, sometimes fatal bleeding" when compared to Plavix, a top-selling blood thinner. On top of that, patients who'd already had strokes faced a higher risk of suffering another stroke if they took Effient.

Are the risks worth it? Nope. Not at all. Because while Effient slightly reduced the risk of non-fatal heart attacks, the number of deaths was "similar" with both drugs. So Effient doesn't really work better, and it increases your risk of repeat stroke and fatal bleeding.

The only possible explanations for this approval: Insanity. Stupidity. Money. (I'm betting on the third.)

Bottom line: If you're heading for angioplasty, make sure the doctor doesn't use Effient.

The World Health Organization is now recommending that virtually everyone on the planet be vaccinated against swine flu. And yet, astonishingly, they also admit that the vaccines are somewhat experimental and may be harmful to people.

Even more disturbingly, they are recommending that people be injected with "live attenuated influenza."

Two shocking bits of news about the H1N1 swine flu virus emerged this week. The first is that the widely-circulating swine flu virus may be a lot more dangerous than people have so far been told: It appears to resemble the 1918 pandemic virus in the fact that it is capable of embedding itself deep in lung tissue and causing deadly infections. This is very different from the more common "seasonal flu" which does not replicate in the lungs.

Explaining this concept, lead researcher Yoshihiro Kawaoka of the University of Wisconsin wrote in the journalNature: "When we conducted the experiments in ferrets and monkeys, the seasonal virus did not replicate in the lungs... The H1N1 virus replicates significantly better in the lungs."

As Reuters reports, Kawaoka also added, "There is a misunderstanding about this virus... There is clear evidence the virus is different than seasonal influenza."

The 1918 influenza pandemic killed at least 40 million people globally (and probably many more). Also remember: That was a time when obesity was extremely rare. Today, obesity is alarmingly common among first-world nations, and obesity is now suspected of making a person highly susceptible to swine flu fatalities (http://www.naturalnews.com/026602_p...).

World Health Organization gets aggressive with vaccination recommendations

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization -- always a trusty friend of Big Pharma -- has announced that swine flu is "unstoppable" and is now directing all the nations of the world to vaccinate their citizens against the H1N1 influenza strain. This is essentially an order for global mandatoryvaccinations.

And yet, at the same time the WHO is recommending mass global vaccinations against the swine flu, it also states on its own website that such vaccines have never been proven safe. In its own words (http://www.who.int/csr/disease/swin...):

[Emphasis added] "Since new technologies are involved in the production of some pandemic vaccines, which have not yet been extensively evaluated for their safety in certain population groups, it is very important to implement post-marketing surveillance of the highest possible quality. In addition, rapid sharing of the results of immunogenicity and post-marketing safety and effectiveness studies among the international community will be essential for allowing countries to make necessary adjustments to their vaccination policies."

In other words: Use the people as guinea pigs and see who dies first!

It's not difficult to decode the WHO's language in this case. The vaccines aren't safe, so they're recommending that people given the vaccines be watched closely to see what happens (who dies).

And just to make sure more people die, the WHO is also recommending such vaccines use "live attenuated influenza."

As stated on the WHO's website:

"In view of the anticipated limited vaccine availability at global level and the potential need to protect against "drifted" strains of virus, SAGE recommended that promoting production and use of vaccines such as those that are formulated with oil-in-water adjuvants and live attenuated influenza vaccines was important."

Inject yourself with live attenuated influenza!

What, exactly, is "live attenuated influenza?" It means live viruses that have been weakened, but may still pose a danger to human health.

Big Pharma, of course, is more than happy to comply with this order... they're getting paid billions to make the live influenza vaccines, after all. Notably, Baxter Pharmaceuticals has already been caught inserting live avian flu viruses in vaccine materials, and other drug companies are only too happy to follow suit. But why, you ask, would governments want to inject their populations with live attenuated influenza DNA? And why would the World Health Organization aggressively promote such a measure, especially since the number of swine flu fatalities so far is exceedingly small?

There are numerous theories on that. I don't claim to know the right answer, but here are some of the theories being talked about by people in the know (people who aren't fooled by Big Government / Big Pharma propaganda):

The population control theory: The swine flu was engineered in a lab, then released in Mexico City precisely to cause a public reaction where people and lawmakers would demand global vaccinations. Those vaccines, in turn, would be intentionally laced with live virus samples designed to kill a large number of people and reduce the global population. All the deaths, of course, could be blamed on the virus; and the drug companies would get rich in the process!

The Big Pharma profit theory: Swine flu vaccines are being pushed globally in order to funnel more profits into the hands of the drug companies. And the more people get sick from the "live attenuated viruses" in the vaccines, the more repeat business the drug companies make from sick patients!

The chemtrail / vaccine binary poison theory: Chemtrails have exposed the populations in major world cities to the first half of a binary poison. The mandatory swine flu vaccines will complete the binary recipe, poisoning people with another seemingly innocent cocktail of chemicals that just happen to combine with the chemtrail poisons and result in widespread death.

The do-gooder theory: [This is a favorite theory of doctors, drug company reps and public health authorities.] All those conspiracy theories are bunk. These vaccines are being forced onto you for your own good by an industry that cares about people and only has your best interests in mind. Profits and power have nothing to do with it. Your government is trying to protect you, didn't you know?

Walking virus incubators

Ninety-nine percent of the U.S. population believes the do-gooder theory, and they will gladly allow themselves to be injected with anything the government recommends (especially if people start dropping dead this fall and the population can be scared into lining up for swine flu shots). The upshot of all this is that ninety-nine percent of the people will then be carrying live "attenuated" swine flu genetic materials in their blood, creating the perfect opportunity for further recombining with seasonal flu.

Global mandatory swine flu vaccinations will, in fact, create a population of infected swine flu carriers. Some of them will die in the 48 hours following the injections. Most will manage to survive the shots and go on to become carriers of swine flu genetic material. With their immune systems weakened by vaccine chemicals and processed, nutrient-depleted junk foods, they will serve as walking incubation vessels for the next sweeping strain of influenza.

And no matter what happens, Big Pharma makes money! The more people die, the more power the government is able to grab through vaccine mandates, forced quarantines, declarations of Martial Law and other similar measures. A pandemic is the perfect opportunity to destroy whatever remaining freedoms the American people still cling to.

Legal Action You Can Take Against Forced Vaccinations (Opinion)

If you are living in the U.S. or many other parts of the world, you may soon be forced to accept a vaccination that is actually a biological weapon created with the intent of causing your death or injury, according to evidence compiled by journalist Jane Burgermeister. The criminals you are charging have infiltrated high government offices and now use the apparatus of the state to carry out and cover up their crimes, and they will try to stop investigative and enforcement actions from taking place.

However, by filing these charges you are guaranteed that your local law enforcement officials will be required to read them and assess the evidence you have presented. Their mandate as law enforcement officials dictates that they must. At the very least, they will become aware that there are bioterrorists in the U.S., and that they are sitting in high government and corporate places. If enough people file charges in the U.S., a District Attorney somewhere may actually take action and prosecute.

Steps to safeguard liberty must be taken now

At a time when we have just completed the annual celebration of our Constitution with its Bill of Rights, we must recall that the Constitution says, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

And from the Bill of Rights, “That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.”

Today we find that our government and other governments around the world have become corroded and corrupted by greed and hunger for power. We are facing a resurrection of Nazi style totalitarianism, under which people are being reduced to the status of slaves who are expendable when they get in the way of wealth and power accumulation.

The deliberate release of an artificially created virus by men with the purpose of triggering forced vaccination with a toxic substance indicates that governments around the world have joined forces with the criminal corporate elite against the rest of humanity.

Yet, we have been slow to wake up to this fact because we have come to believe that if we don’t hear about something on television or read about it in the mainstream media, it can’t be true. We have failed to realize that these traditional information outlets are owned and controlled by the very people who are plotting against us. Any mention of their true agenda is prohibited in traditional information outlets.

The powers that scheme against us have tried to make us distrustful of the information found on the internet, the one remaining source for freedom of speech. Their representatives deride reports of what we witness everywhere around us as being conspiracy theory. But once we have read the Criminal Charges, we can no longer fail to recognize the tightening grip of totalitarianism.

We have failed to safeguard our most precious possession, our liberty. We have devoted ourselves to the mindless accumulation of goods and services and we have used our possessions as weapons against each other. We have allowed our possessions to divide us, and we have become complacent and compliant in the face of what really counts. It is time to wake up from our national stupor and realize we are about to lose the only possession that really counts.

The charges filed by Jane Burgermeister with the FBI on June 10th may be the force that galvanizes us into action. By filing her charges she has rubbed our faces in the fact we are rapidly losing out liberty. This fact can no longer be denied. Many Americans are embarrassed that while our heads were buried in the sand, these charges were filed by a person living in Austria. And now we know that she has paid a high price for trying to save us.

On June 30th, Jane was unexpectedly fired from her job as European correspondent for the publication Renewable Energy, just days after receiving a promotion from them, and immediately after the Natural News exclusive article appeared. Renewable Energy is a publication of PenWell, a company geared toward coverage of the power generation industry. Jane was already an employee of Renewable Energy when it was acquired by PenWell in 2007. She believes the decision to fire her was the result of the information presented in the article. If she is correct, her firing follows the pattern of other journalists who have recently been fired as the result of standing up for what they believe is true. That's a laudable goal. But the Obama administration along with members of the U.S. Congress are using this singular moment to move their own agenda: propping up U.S. biotechnology companies like Monsanto. They hope to accomplish this by promoting genetically modified seeds and chemical inputs as tools to fight hunger, despite research that shows that genetically modified organisms (GMOs) have little impact on crop yield and do not fare well in drought-prone regions that need the most help.

10 Food Ingredients to Avoid to Feel Better and Look Better

Red 3, used to dye cherries, fruit cocktail, ice cream candy and baked goods have been shown to cause thyroid tumors in rats.

This harmful artificial color causes cancer and changes in brain chemistry. Read the list of ingredients in your child’s cough syrup (artificial color).

Green 3 is a potential allergen and has been linked to bladder cancer. Green 3 is added to candy, mint jelly, cereals and beverages.

Blue 1 and 2, found in beverages, candy, baked goods, cereals and pet food have been linked to allergies and cancer.

Yellow 5 is the most notable artificial color because it causes the most immediate allergic reaction in people sensitive to salicylates such as aspirin.
